Saw this study today:
World-First Study Reveals That There Is up to 100x More Plastic on the Ocean Floor Than the Surface - APRIL 12, 2024 https://scitechdaily.com/world-firs...an-the-surface/ ...estimates up to 11 million (metric) tons of plastic pollution is sitting on the ocean floor. Golly, that sounds SCARY!!!! 11,000,000 tons / 100 = 110,000 tons (surface plastic). 11,000,000 (seabed plastic) + 110,000 tons (surface plastic) = 11,110,000 metric tons of plastic total ------- The World Factbook - Ocean volume https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factb...d/ocean-volume/ Arctic Ocean volume: 18,750,000 cubic km Atlantic Ocean volume: 310,410,900 cubic km Indian Ocean volume: 264,000,000 cubic km Pacific Ocean volume: 669,880,000 cubic km Southern Ocean volume: 71,800,000 cubic km Total oceanic volume: 1,316,092,775 cubic km ------- Can't guarantee no math errors, but you'll get the general idea: 1,000,000,000 cubic meters = 1 cubic km 1,316,092,775 cubic km x 1,000,000,000 cubic meters/cubic km = 1.316092775^18 total ocean volume in cubic meters Specific Weight of Water at STP: 0.9982033 metric tons per cubic meter 0.9982033 metric tons/cubic meter x 1.316092775^18 cubic meters = 1.3137261^18 metric tons 1.111^7 metric tons total plastic mass / 1.3137261^18 metric tons total ocean mass = 8.4568485^-12 So, the total plastic mass is 1/8,456,848,500,000 or 8.457 quadrillionths of the total ocean water mass or 0.0000000008457% by weight. So, as you can see, this is a HUGE problem! /sarc ------- And here's the GREAT threat to planet Earth which can ALL fit here: https://img-9gag-fun.9cache.com/pho...mvB_700bwp.webp

Statistically, we got a better chance of being bitten by a shark." Then I showed her the scar on my elbow from a shark attack. I said, "I got this when my plane went down off of Florida." - Dennis Regan Last edited by Winston2021 : 04-12-2024 at 08:19 PM. |

Plastic came from natural materials on EARTH, it has just been returned to a different SECTOR of the EARTH in a different form.

Quote:
"Plastic came out of the Earth; the Earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children. Could be the only reason the Earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place: it wanted plastic for itself, didn't know how to make it, needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old philosophical question: "Why are we here?" Plastic, [plural anal reference]! - George Carlin

George Carlin is my absolute favorite comic.
"I'm in shape; ROUND IS a SHAPE !"

I bet there are 1000x more rocket boosters at the bottom off the coast of Florida than are at the surface as well. Of course, we gotta have a Falcon booster floating in on a barge for the math to work out, otherwise, 1000 x 0 is zero.
