If you take a look at the top you'll note that we have our new logo online. The new design contains the winners of the two most popular rockets per our poll, the Estes Skydart and the Centuri Orion, and has the YORF name moved to the top of the logo for better readability.

Now let's hope that these two kits are re-released or cloned by Estes or Semroc. :D

I'd like to thank Buzz Nau for designing the logo for me.

I'd also like to thank everyone that participated in the logo contest and Uncle Mike's Rocket Shack (http://www.unclemikesrocketshack.com/) for sponsoring the contest.

I think we know who stands the better chance of getting either of these to market first... :D

And the Skydart would probably be the easier of the two to produce.

Nice job, all of you.

I like it! What's also pretty cool is that when one or both of these rockets are produced again the logo will change again.

Neat concept YORF and well done! :)

Really nice job on the logo, Buzz.

Now why don't you show Carl how easy it is to build a Skydart and how nice they fly? ;)

Now why don't you show Carl how easy it is to build a Skydart and how nice they fly? ;)Buzz has been lobbying for some time now! I do have the laser-cut parts and one built around here someplace.

Now we have to do it! Buzz has all of you in on the conspiracy.

AND that Orion! I have a set of wraps, but no experience with vacuforming.

By the way, I like the new logo and am humbled to see our old logo on there.

Carl,

Honestly, there is nothing in all rocketry more beautiful than watching one of Buzz's Sky Darts gently circling, circling, circling on a windless day. I have seen it several times now and it never fails to amaze me.

Buzz graciously led a Sky Dart build session for our local NAR group. With the laser cut parts the entire build (without finishing) took less than 2 hours. Surprisingly easy to put together.

Be sure to have him show you his elastic retaining clip which replaces the through the tail fin elastic. Very clever but probably a little too hard to mass produce. You could always include a little piece of piano wire and bending instructions as a builder option.

Photo below is of a truly beautiful Sky Dart built that nite by Doug, a member of our NAR group.

Wow! Look at the finish on those wings. Gee, I just placed an order with Carl but I guess if he has the parts, another order is in store. And I do like boost gliders.... ;)

Dave Miller from Sirius Rocketry is good at vacuforming. I'm pretty confident he'd give you any tips needed. ;)

I was going to say Gus that I did show mine to Carl at NARAM 49. ;) Thanks for the kind words, but thanks should go to the Sky Dart designer, Larry Renger. They are a ton of fun to fly. :)

So, does this quality as an "official" clone, a "good 'nuff" clone, or does it still require the nacelle pieces to satisfy the rules?

I used wire on mine for the elastic catch, fastened with a few drops of epoxy. Laser cut parts sure would be nice. ;) I might have to build another in that case. :) Here's mine.

Oooh man. Imagine the possibilities if Semroc had vacuum forming at their disposal! We can start with the Orion and work our way up the list. ;) :D

If Semroc could vac-form the wrap for the Orion, the Enerjet Athena could be just around the corner as both kits use the same wraps.

Off topic, but... didn't someone mention using some sort of corrugated craft paper for a wrap when building scale models? I wish I could remember where I read that, as I'd like to try it.

I think somebody here built an Orion using the corrugated guts of a piece of regular cardboard.

Was it Bob Thomas and the Orion he built in this thread:

Bob's Orion turned out beautiful! The craft stores carry corrugated cardstock for less than a dollar a sheet. I've seen some that have nearly the same corrugation as what Bob salvaged. I also have a dozen or more sheets of some cardstock that has fine corrugation, like what is used on the LJ II for example, perhaps even smaller. The nice thing about the vacuum form is having all those doo-dads pre made for you. ;) Although, cloning this thing is certainly easier than a host of others I can think of. Very cool rocket. I'd love to see a Semroc version, even if it incorporated currugated cardstock and wood doo-dads for the wrap! I'd be on it like a fly on.....

:D

I think I found the cheapest source. My last Chicken Parmigian Hero (hoagie) came in a cardboard footlong clamshell container - yep, same corrugation as the card I used for the ORION. I'm getting the urge to build again so there may be an ATHENA in my future (even if she smells a little "Cheezy")

I found a pack of that corrugated paper in a dollar shop yesterday... I'm planning an Orion-like (but not really) BT-70 rocket using it and a set of Taurus fins from Semroc, which I just ordered.

Man did I order a lot of parts... between Semroc and Uncle Mike I just tripled my build queue.

Carl, you have to talk to me! :-)As far as I'm concerned, Dave is the King of 21st Century Vacuuforming.

Sure, it's a little wordy, but it gets my point across. ;) :D

(But Bill E. is King of the Popcorn People. :p )

Cheers,
